Some things I learned to keep a Healthy, Happy and Beautiful Life...

Silence. Yes. Peace, rest, sleep, meditation, rumination, freedom from any form of worldly concern and thought. Silence is also music…only with frequencies that are inaudible to the human ear. SERENITY. It comes in many names, but I call it food of the soul. PRAYER. You should balance your activities with the proper amount of rest. Some of the leading experts in the field of aging now believe that regular exercise along with the proper amount of rest may actually add years to the life span. Results from a number of tests indicate that speed and muscular strength of many of the elderly can be extended. Just as we feed the flesh with food and exertion, both the body and soul need respite from the mundane. Commune with God.

Leading authorities agree that this new data is going to shatter many of the myths about aging and physical performance. The conclusion now is that the performance and ability of the elderly has long been underestimated, diet, proper sleep and exercise along with rest and relaxation are all important factors in preserving our bodies.

Music. That is, the audible form of silence. Research has shown that music with a strong beat can stimulate brainwaves to resonate in sync with the beat, with faster beats bringing sharper concentration and more alert thinking, and a slower tempo promoting a calm, meditative state. Also, research has found that the change in brainwave activity levels that music can bring can also enable the brain to shift speeds more easily on its own as needed, which means that music can bring lasting benefits to your state of mind, even after you’ve stopped listening. With alterations in brainwaves comes changes in other bodily functions. Those governed by the autonomic nervous system, such as breathing and heart rate can also be altered by the changes music can bring. This can mean slower breathing, slower heart rate, and an activation of the relaxation response, among other things. This is why music and music therapy can help counteract or prevent the damaging effects of chronic stress, greatly promoting not only relaxation, but health.

Music can also be used to bring a more positive state of mind, helping to keep depression and anxiety at bay. This can help prevent the stress response from wreaking havoc on the body, and can help keep creativity and optimism levels higher, bringing many other benefits.

Smile. Humor. Positive outlook and disposition. Laughter is one of the best things for your mental and physical state. People are naturally attracted to someone who has a good sense of humor. You can develop a good outlook and a good sense of humor by associating with and surrounding yourself with pleasant happy people.

Recognize that stress is a killer. A life filled with stress can really wreak havoc on your body causing a number of illnesses such as heart attacks, strokes, asthma, gastric problems, menstrual disorders, ulcerative colitis, angina, irritable colon, increased blood pressure, ulcers, headaches, etc.

There are different types of stress such as mental, emotional and physical. Emotional stress seems to take the greatest toll on everyone. All stress is not bad; in fact, life would not be very interesting if it were not met with challenges. However, too much stress, too often with no effective and appropriate outlet, does not allow the body and soul to recuperate. You might review a typical week to see if you can identify things that might be making you anxious or causing you stress. Once identified, stressors can be attacked and eliminated. I take things moderately, always keeping in mind that our so-called lives in this planet is only temporal and completely insignificant vis-à-vis the eternity that awaits us in the next.

Chronic worriers don't have more serious problems than others - they just think they do. Many worriers try to cope by trying not to think about their problems, but this just makes things worse. Doctors say that chronic worriers feel less anxious if they actually spend a half-hour a day thinking specifically about their problems.

Gym. Workout. Sports. Get plenty of exercise. People who are physically fit look good and feel good. A good exercise regimen will lengthen your life. Improve your appearance, build self confidence and help delay the aging process.

Remember that you need to do something physical every day. If you don't use your joints, quite simply they'll tighten up with age to create the stooped, bent and worn out appearance we so often associate with old age. Studies have shown that people with arthritis experience less pain if they continue to keep their joints flexible. As one gets older, the bones tend to get brittle which is why it is common for senior citizens to break bones and especially their hips when they fall.

Diet. Eating right, getting proper sleep and learning to relax are all very valuable in maintaining a healthy body and mind. And keep in mind that eating healthy foods and avoiding those high in fats, sodium and cholesterol will help to decrease your risk of heart disease, high blood pressure and associated problems. The things we ingest or place in our mouths ultimately becomes "us." The food we eat becomes our skin, flesh, cells, etc. So be careful with what you eat, because such will become the person that you are. If you lack adequate nutritional know-how, my simplest advice "Stick to Greens!"

By extension, be careful with what passes from your lips, every unkind and bitter or untruthful word that you utter betrays the kind of internal system you have. Rumors or unverified information or derogatory/slanderous tales only besmirch you as an unwholesome individual. So never allow any rumor to come your way or be passed by you. It betrays poor breeding, maleducation, insecurities and lack of self-restraint. So dismiss all unhelpful talk...especially if it concerns another individual's private life. Even if such statements were true, as long as it is unkind and unhelpful or destructive to another...why bother to discuss it? We do not live to pronounce judgment on others, but rather to enjoy a healthy and progressive life...not just for ourselves but for the community, in general. After all, we are the only planet among nine that has "life". Let us not waste such precious life destroying each other.

COMING THIS SEPTEMBER...

Inside sources confirm to me that Gossip Girl will indeed be having an extra long season next year (to make up for the episodes we missed this year due to the strike).

Though nothing will be made official until next week when the CW announces its schedule in New York City, I'm told the show has been confirmed for a 24-episode season two.

And even better? Everyone we know and love will be back, with the expected full-time addition of Michelle Trachtenberg, for those double-dozen eps. (According to Leighton Meester, the cast calls her character "Geor-gina" in the way that rhymes with a female body part, since she's such a See You Next Tuesday. Hee!)

I just hung out with Leighton on the set of Entourage (she's there shooting a guest stint for the HBO comedy's upcoming season), and she told me they're planning to shoot Gossip Girl in the Hamptons at the beginning of season two. "'Cause you gotta go to the Hamptons, right?" she said with a giggle. "And, by the way, we aren't shooting in Staten Island like they did on Sex and the City. We're shooting in the real Hamptons." Touché, Carrie & Co.!
