Risk Factors

Risk Factors

Lethal Combinations
Add a bad choice to a bad gene, and you have double trouble
By: Denny Watkins
SOURCE: MEN'S HEALTH MAGAZINE

Genetics researchers are focusing on so-called probabilistic gene mutations, which increase your chances of developing a disease when combined with a specific environmental condition. The research is still in its infancy, but eventually, scientists say, you'll be able to undergo a series of genetic tests that will reveal the diseases you have the most risk factors for. Here are a few recently discovered fatal combinations.

Condition: Colon Cancer

Mutant Gene: Serpina1, which, when working properly, protects the body from its own immune system; the mutant version causes a protein deficiency

Plus This Risk Factor: Smoking

Increases Your Risk By . . . 2,000 percent

Prevalence of Mutation: 1 in 2,500 people; more common in Caucasians

Genetic Test Available? Yes

Condition: Heart Disease

Mutant Gene: LDLRAP1, which normally regulates levels of cholesterol but, when flawed, lets it balloon to 350 or more

Plus This Risk Factor: Eating a high-fat diet

Increases Your Risk By . . . 1,000 percent

Prevalence of Mutation: 1 in 500 people

Genetic Test Available? Yes

Condition: Stroke

Mutant Gene: F5, which helps blood coagulate. When the gene is mutated, blood becomes abnormally sticky and more likely to clot.

Plus This Risk Factor: Being overweight or smoking

Increases Your Risk By . . . 3 to 8 percent

Prevalence of Mutation: 5 percent of the population

Genetic Test Available? Yes

BOND OF BROTHERS

Bond of Brothers

Health history of your siblings may reveal your risk factors
Edited by: Erin Hobday
When you scan your family tree for disease, check who's on the branch beside you, too. Because siblings share both genetics and childhood lifestyle factors, their health histories can reveal common at-risk areas that can't be uncovered based on their parents' pasts alone, says Robin Bennett, M.S., C.G.C., a genetic counselor at the University of Washington medical center. Find out what your brother or sister has battled so you can begin taking evasive action.

The Condition And Your Relative Risk

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)

If a sibling has COPD -- persistent airway obstruction -- your chances of following suit are five times greater.

Colon cancer

When colon cancer pops up in a sibling, your odds of producing a polyp double.

Type-2 diabetes

Your risk of developing type-2 diabetes goes up by 30 percent if one of your siblings has the disease.

Glaucoma

A brother or sister with glaucoma makes you 10 times more vulnerable to this blinding eye condition.

Heart disease

If a sibling has heart disease before age 55, plaque is twice as likely to take hold inside your arteries.

Hemochromatosis

A faulty gene on chromosome six causes this iron-overload disorder. Having a sibling with it boosts your own risk by 25 percent.

Prostate cancer

A brother with prostate cancer makes you three times more likely to develop a growth in your gland.

Varicoceles

Having a brother with varicoceles -- varicose veins in the scrotum -- raises your risk by 70 percent.

Cracking Open the Apple iPhone 3G

iPhone 3G disassembled

Apple's iPhone 3G arrived on Friday with a bevy of new enterprise-ready features, including Exchange support, business-grade security, and third-party applications powered by an SDK. As with the first iPhone, we waited in line, bought our phone, signed an AT&T contract, and promptly began to crack open the case. Come along as we disassemble the Apple iPhone 3G.

Also, we always disassembled our gadgets with the intent to reassemble them. The iPhone 3G was no exception. It worked when we put it back together.

Canola Oil

CANOLA  OIL

"A concerned citizen from America send this e-mail.  I would like to share it to all of you."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Friends

Recently I bought a cooking oil that is new to our supermarkets, Canola Oil.  I tried it because the label assured me it was lowest in 'bad' fats.  However, when I had used half the bottle, I concluded that the label told me surprisingly little else and I started to wonder: where does canola oil come from?

Olive oil comes from olives, peanut oil from peanuts, sunflower oil from sunflowers; but what is a canola?  There was nothing on the label to enlighten me which I thought odd.  So, I did some investigating on the Internet.  There are plenty of official Canola sites lauding this new 'wonder' oil with all its low-fat health benefits.  It takes a little longer to find sites that tell the less palatable details.

Here are just a few facts everyone should know before buying anything containing canola.  Canola is not the name of a natural plant but a made-up word, from the words ' Canada ' and 'oil'. Canola is a genetically engineered plant developed in Canada from the Rapeseed Plant, which is part of the mustard family of plants.

According to Agri Alternatives, The Online Innovation, and Technology Magazine for Farmers, 'By nature, these rapeseed oils, which have long been used to produce oils for industrial purposes, are... toxic to humans and other animals'.  (This, by the way, is one of the websites singing the praises of the new canola industry.)

Rapeseed oil is poisonous to living things and is an excellent insect repellent.  I have been using it (in very diluted form, as per instructions) to kill the aphids on my roses for the last two years.  It works very well; it suffocates them.  Ask for it at your nursery.  Rape is an oil that is used as a lubricant, fuel, soap and synthetic rubber base and as a illuminate for color pages in magazines.

It is an industrial oil.  It is not a food.  Rape oil, it seems, causes emphysema, respiratory distress, anemia, constipation, irritability, and blindness in animals and humans.  Rape oil was widely used in animal feeds in England and Europe between 1986 and 1991, when it was thrown out.  Remember the 'Mad Cow disease' scare, when millions of cattle in the UK were slaughtered in case of infecting humans?  Cattle were being fed on a mixture containing material from dead sheep, and sheep suffer from a disease called 'scrapie'.

It was thought this was how 'Mad Cow' began and started to infiltrate the human chain.  What is interesting is that when rape oil was removed from animal feed, 'scrapie' disappeared.  We also have not seen any further reports of 'Mad Cow' since rape oil was removed from the feed.  Perhaps not scientifically proven, but interesting all the same.  US and Canadian farmers grow genetically engineered rapeseed and manufacturers use its oil (canola) in thousands of processed foods, with the blessings of Canadian and US government watchdog agencies.  The canola supporting websites say that canola is safe to use.  They admit it was developed from the rapeseed, but insist that through genetic engineering it is no longer rapeseed, but 'canola' instead.

Except canola means 'Canadian oil'; and the plant is still a rape plant, albeit genetically modified.  The new name provides perfect cover for commercial interests wanting to make millions.  Look at the ingredients list on labels. Apparently peanut oil is being replaced with rape oil.  You will find it in an alarming number of processed foods.  There is more, but to conclude: rape oil was the source of the chemical warfare agent mustard gas, which was banned after blistering the lungs and skins of hundred of thousands of soldiers and civilians during W.W.I.  Recent French reports indicate that it was again in use during the Gulf War.

Check products for ingredients.  If the label says, 'may contain the following' and lists canola oil, you know it contains canola oil because it is the cheapest oil and the Canadian government subsidizes it to industries involved in food processing.

I do not know what you will be cooking with tonight, but I will be using olive oil and old-fashioned butter, from a genetically unmodified cow.

Here is more information..........

Canola oil from the rape seed, referred to as the Canadian oil because Canada is mainly responsible for it being marketed in the USA .  The Canadian government and industry paid our Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) $50 million dollars to have canola oil placed on the (GRAS) List 'Generally Recognized As Safe'.   Thus a new industry was created.  Laws were enacted affecting international trade, commerce, and traditional diets.  Studies with lab animals were disastrous.  Rats developed fatty degeneration of heart, kidney, adrenals, and thyroid gland.  When canola oil was withdrawn from their diets, the deposits dissolved but scar tissue remained on all vital organs.  No studies on humans were made before money was spent to promote Canola oil in the USA .

Adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD) is a rare fatal degenerative disease caused by a build up of long-chain fatty acids (c22 to c28) which destroys the myelin (protective sheath) of the nerves.  Canola oil is a very long chain fatty acid oil (c22).  Those who will defend canola oil say that the Chinese and Indians have used it for centuries with no effect, however it was in an unrefined form.(*)  (* taken from FATS THAT HEAL AND FATS THAT KILL by Udo Erasmus.)

My cholesterol level was 150.  After a year using Canola oil I tested 260.  I
switched back to pure olive oil and it has taken 5 years to get it down to 160.  Thus began this project to find answers since most Doctors will say that Canola oil is O.K.

My sister spilled Canola oil on a piece of fabric, after 5 pre-treatings and harsh washings, the oil spot still showed.  She stopped using Canola oil, wondering what it did to our insides if it could not be removed from cloth easily.  Our Father bred birds, always checking labels to insure there was no rape seed in their food.  He said, 'The birds will eat it, but they do not live very long.'  A friend, who worked for only 9 months as a quality control taster at an apple-chip factory where Canola oil was used exclusively for frying, developed numerous health problems. These included loose teeth & gum disease; numb hands and feet; swollen arms and legs upon rising in the morning; extreme joint pain especially n hands, cloudy vision, constipation with stools like black marbles, hearing loss; skin tears from being bumped; lack of energy; hair loss and heart pains.  It has been five years since she has worked there and still has some joint pain, gum disease, and numbness.

A fellow worker, about 30 years old, who ate very little product, had a routine check up and found that his blood vessels were like those of an 80 year old man. Two employees fed the waste product to baby calves and their hair fell out.  After removing the fried apple chips from the diet their hair grew back in.  My daughter and her girls were telling jokes.  Stephanie hit her mom's arm with the back of a butter knife in a gesture, 'Oh mom', not hard enough to hurt.  My daughters arm split open like it was rotten.  She called me to ask what could have caused it.  I said, 'I'll bet anything that you are using Canola oil'.  Sure enough, there was a big gallon jug in the pantry.

Rape seed oil is a penetrating oil, to be used in light industry, not for human consumption.  It contains a toxic substance, (from encyclopedia).  Even after the processing to reduce the erucic acid content, it is still a penetrating oil.  We have found that it turns rancid very fast.  Also it leaves a residual rancid odor on clothing.

Compiled by Darleen Bradley.

Canola oil is a health hazard to use as a cooking oil or salad oil.  It is not the healthy oil we thought it was.  It is not fit for human consumption, do not eat canola oil, it can hurt you.  Polyunsaturated or not, this is a bad oil.

Defend Your Manhood

A man's reproductive organs can encounter a variety of technical difficulties. Consider this your troubleshooting guide
By: Steve Mazzucchi

We men are a little uncomfortable with our genitals. Girls rock skirts sans undies (thanks, Britney), but most guys wouldn't dare don a kilt. R-rated movies showcase female pink parts, but they cover Borat's junk with a black rectangle. And while women have an entire area of medicine dedicated to the health of their private regions, if it wasn't for the hernia check, we men would hardly drop trou at the doctor's office.

The result? When it comes to caring for some of our most critical equipment--the stuff we need to, you know, keep our species going--we're virtually clueless. And that ain't good, because a lot can happen to a man's penis, testicles, and prostate: itchiness, infection, pain, bumps, sores, growths, rashes, burning, drooping, swelling, clogging, and, hell, cancer. If you're not paying attention, you can wind up sick, sterile, or dead. With a little knowledge, though, you can cut much of the bad stuff off at the pass. Start here. These nine scenarios may make you wince, but at least you'll know what to do if they happen to you.

There's an agonizing pain in my scrotum.
The cause: Assuming you weren't just kicked there, one of your testicles is probably twisted around something called the spermatic cord, cutting off the blood supply. "Think of a ball hanging on a rope," says Tony Makhlouf, M.D., Ph.D., a urologic surgeon at the University of Minnesota medical center. "As the rope turns, it bunches, and the ball rises." This knotting--testicular torsion, it's called--instantly causes a sharp pain.

The cure: Head to an E.R. "If it isn't treated within 4 hours, you can lose a testicle," warns Larry Lipshultz, M.D., a professor of urology at Baylor College of Medicine. "Why take a chance?" The docs at the E.R. will do an ultrasound to assess whether your testicle and cord are indeed twisted. If that's the case, a urologic surgeon will be called to untangle things. Then he'll suture each testicle to the inside of your scrotum to prevent the torsion from happening again.

There's a slightly less agonizing pain in my guys.
The cause: The coiled tube that carries sperm from your testicles has probably become inflamed due to a bacterial infection. The most common culprits are gonorrhea, chlamydia, and, in men over 40, a urinary-tract infection that migrated. The testicles themselves can also become inflamed.

The cure: Don't just pop some Advil and try to tough it out. "If you don't treat it, the tubes can become scarred and blocked," says Dr. Makhlouf. "You could become infertile." So see your doctor, who will probably prescribe at least 2 weeks on an oral antibiotic to tackle the bacteria. Swelling and pain should begin to lessen within 3 days, but it could take months for all symptoms to subside.

I have pain in my penis, testicles, and lower belly, and down my legs, and it hurts when I urinate or ejaculate.
The cause: Chronic pelvic pain syndrome, usually resulting from an inflamed prostate gland. "It's a collection of symptoms that originates from an injury, often an infection, and the problems come from how the body responds to that infection," says Daniel Shoskes, M.D., a Cleveland Clinic urologist.

The cure: Two-thirds of men will get better with antibiotics in the early stages. For those whose inflammation persists beyond initial infection, Dr. Shoskes prescribes herbal-based bioflavonoid preparations, such as Prosta-Q and Q-Urol, which reduce inflammation. Flomax and other prescription agents that block an important receptor in the region also reduce pain and can improve urinary flow. Still other men suffer from nerve and muscle spasms, requiring muscle relaxants and physical therapy. See a urologist in any case, but you can help your own cause by taking hot baths; by avoiding alcohol, spicy foods, and caffeine; and by using a doughnut-shaped cushion when sitting for long periods of time.

It feels like my scrotum is a bag of worms, and my goolies are droopier than Sophia Loren's bustline.
The cause: Sometimes the valves inside the veins of the scrotum don't close properly, so blood pools and they swell. The resulting bundle of enlarged veins, or varicoceles, doesn't always hurt, but the extra blood warms the testes. This jeopardizes sperm production (which requires temps cooler than 98.6˚F) and causes the testicles to hang away from the body. About 20 percent of men will experience a varicocele at some point.

The cure: "If you notice you have low-hanging fruit, see a urologist who specializes in infertility," says Harry Fisch, M.D., director of the male reproductive center at New York Presbyterian Hospital and author of The Male Biological Clock. He or she can stop blood from pooling by tying off the veins or blocking them. It's minor outpatient surgery and you can have sex again in 3 weeks, although you should schedule a follow-up semen analysis in 3 to 4 months. In 60 percent of infertile men, semen quality will improve after surgery, says Dr. Fisch. Even if you're not trying to conceive, he adds, the problem should be corrected if it's painful or creates a size discrepancy between testicles.

My semen has a reddish tint, and it drips out rather than shoots when I ejaculate.
The cause: When infections begin to heal, scar tissue can form and create a blockage in the ejaculatory duct. "It's like a five-lane highway becoming a two-lane highway," says Dr. Fisch. The red tint is blood from the initial infection. Your ejaculate volume may drop below the average of half a tablespoon and continue to dribble like an NBA point guard after you achieve orgasm.

The cure: You can function with a dribbly ejaculate, but it's kind of a buzz kill. Fortunately, there's a surgical solution. The formal term is "transurethral resection of the ejaculatory ducts," but it's simpler than it sounds. "We just scrape out the scar tissue, and that opens it all up," says Dr. Fisch. You can resume sexual activity in 7 to 10 days.

I'm 25 and in great shape, but I have trouble maintaining an erection.
The cause: According to the American Urological Association, about 25 percent of erectile-dysfunction cases are psychological, and it could be anything from relationship issues to performance anxiety. For example, a man may have a sexual experience after heavy drinking and fail to get it up. "In subsequent sexual attempts without alcohol, he'll remember that episode, think something's wrong with him, and be unable to perform," says Karen Boyle, M.D., director of reproductive medicine and surgery at the Johns Hopkins Brady Urological Institute.

The cure: Once physical factors have been ruled out, try seducing her after a romantic breakfast. Your testosterone levels peak around 7 a.m., so your hormones, and your penis, will be at full attention then. In many cases, such as the aforementioned alcohol scenario, a pharmaceutical option can also offer a helping hand. "A little added self-confidence--such as receiving some extra 'lift' from Viagra--goes a long way in this arena," says Andrew McCullough, M.D., director of sexual health and male fertility at the New York University medical center. If all else fails, seek counseling to address the under-lying psychological issues.

I have an itchy red rash in my groin area.
The cause: If it's on your thighs, it's often tinea cruris (a.k.a. jock itch), a fungus that thrives in warm, moist environments like, say, gym shorts that haven't been washed since the Clinton administration. If it's bright red and right on the penis, it may be a yeast infection, which can be passed from women to men through unprotected sex.

The cure: Preventionwise, shed damp gym clothes and shower immediately after exercising, and dry the area thoroughly before dressing. For treatment, an over-the-counter medication like Lotrimin can work wonders. "Continue using it for 1 to 2 weeks after the rash is gone to really knock it out and prevent it from coming back," says dermatologist Peter Kopelson, M.D., of the Kopelson Clinic, in Beverly Hills. For a yeast infection, try an over-the-counter antifungal cream, applying twice daily for a week. Don't treat either condition with hydrocortisone cream. By suppressing your immune system, "hydrocortisone will actually make the fungus worse," says Dr. Kopelson.

I have cauliflower-shaped growths on my penis, a watery drip from my penis, painful blisters on my genitals, a thick yellow drip at times, reddish chancre sores on my genitals, and raised bumps on my groin.
The causes: You have, in order, genital HPV, chlamydia, genital herpes, gonorrhea, syphilis, and molluscum. You haven't been wearing a condom, have you?

The cures: We're not here to lecture you on STDs, but there are a few new things you should know. First, the FDA is reviewing the efficacy of a genital-HPV vaccine, Gardasil, for men. Currently, guys can get the three-shot treatment for a little over $300, says Stephen Tyring, M.D., Ph.D., medical director of the Center for Clinical Studies, in Houston. His research team helped secure approval for the female version of the vaccine. Second, according to a CDC study, 8.2 percent of men between the ages of 16 and 24 are infected with chlamydia, but only 2.4 percent of those men have symptoms. And research by the New York City department of health and mental hygiene found that one in eight women treated for chlamydia were reinfected within a year. The point? If your girlfriend has had chlamydia, you should be screened and treated to avoid possibly reinfecting her. Third, "Molluscum [a viral infection] is the newest scourge we are seeing on campus," says Joel Schlessinger, M.D., president of the American Society of Cosmetic Dermatology and Aesthetic Surgery. "The [raised bumps are] very contagious, and although they carry little or no risk, they can be a nuisance and require several treatments to fully eradicate." Keep one eye open, college boy.

There's a bulge in my groin area, and it hurts when I bend over, cough, or try to lift heavy stuff.
The cause: You should have hired movers to lift that fridge. Inguinal hernias occur when part of the intestine protrudes through a congenitally weak abdominal wall. "It's often associated with a major straining episode," says Dr. Fisch, but a simple sneeze can set it off.

The cure: If it's small and doesn't bother you, no action may be needed. If it's growing or painful, lying down with your pelvis higher than your head can reduce the discomfort, but ultimately you'll need surgery. This will come in the form of either a herniorrhaphy, in which the edges of healthy tissue are sewn together, or the more modern hernioplasty, in which a piece of synthetic mesh is laparascopically inserted to cover the entire inguinal area. (A surgeon will recommend the option best suited to repair your particular type of abdominal-wall tear.) You'll be back to work within a few days.

WINNER ITO...dagdag sakit ulo!

It was jazz an ordinary day.

The skies were clear, the birds were chipping. Ang ganda-ganda ng araw!
Nasa SM ako noon at katatapos ko lang mamili ng groceries. Timing naman nasa foodcore si Angel Locsin, nagpro-provoke ng movie nya. Grabe, andaming fans, pull-packed talaga! Dahil fans nya rin ako, nakipila rin ako.
Then suddenly, out of the loo, may bumulong sa akin ng: "Indaaaayyyy......"
Huh? It sounded like a familiar sound. Who can it be now?
"Dodong!" sigaw ko.
Napalakas yata voice ko. Kasi the other fans turned their backs to their behind at napatingin sa amin. Sabi ko "Sorry, I didn't mean to be loud and proud." Hinawakan na lang ni Dodong ang kamay ko at lumayo kami from the crowd.
"Kamusta na Inday? Do you come here open? tanong nya.
"Bihira lang, Dodong. I'm just droppings by. Ethnic and schedule ko eh" sabi ko.
Memories came flushing in my mind. How can I forget to remember Dodong?
Siya na may mata ni Piolo, dimple ni Aga, at bigote ni Rex Cortez. he's every woman's dreamboat. I was just starting my tour of duty kay ate noon nang unang makilala ko si Dodong. Contraction worker siya sa ginagawang bahay sa tapat namin. Naging kami for a while then after that were not an item anymore.
"Tanghali na Inday. What did you say we have lunch together?" tanong ni Dodong. "I don't mine" sagot ko.
Sa restaurant, nilapitan kaagad kami ng waiter. "What's your odor sir?" sabi nung waiter kay Dodong.
"Do you have porkshop?" tanong ni Dodong.
"Yes sir" sabi nito. "Our porkshop with a resistance to the teeth of boast of our chef. Domestic careful selection of pork with little fat of female liking is used. The exquisite cooking which repeated trial and error and was completed. it also has healthy vegetables with salad feeling fully" dagdag niya.
"And you mam?" sabay tingin naman sa akin.
Hmmm... mukhang masarap yung porkshop. Pero I'm cutting down on my carbon kaya pinigilan ko.
"I'll just have water, thanks. Liquidate diet ako eh." sagot ko.
Pagkatapos kumain, nagyaya si Dodong manood ng sine. Teka teka, this is going too far. Besides, it's a long, long way to run.
"Reality chess, Dodong. May asawa na ako, si Jay. As a mother of fact, I'm happily married" pagmamalaki ko.
"Di na pwede yung tulad ng dati. Sorry pero I didn't expect you still have more feelings than I expected. i don't want you getting the way.
Past is fast. Therefore, cause and defect." dagdag ko pa.
Tumahimik sya. Parang may language barrel na namagitan sa amin. The seconds that passed seemed like fraternity. Di nagla-on, nagsalita na rin sya. "I don't care less!" sigaw ni Dodong
Shocks, give me a brake! The nerd ng taong ito para sigawan ako! To think it's his oth er woman that caused our separation to part.
Kinabahan na ako. I felt speedbumps all over my body and was having panic attach.
Tinalikuran ko siya at nagmadali akong lumakad palayo.
Pero sumunod pa rin siya like a monkey on my butt. Hanggang sa makakita ako ng security guard. Biglang nawala si Dodong.
"Excuse me kuya, pwedeng magtanong?" sabi ko sa mamang guard.
"Of course miss, I can help you with my pleasure." sagot niya.
"Saan po ba ang exit? Could you point me to the right erection? I got lost in my eyes."
"Diretso lang." sabi niya. "Then turn right anytime with care."
"Thanks for your corporation" sabi ko.
Buti na lang nandun si kuya. Pero saglit lang, I smell something peachy. As I turned, nakita ko na namang nakasunod si Dodong! Delaying static lang pala kanina ang pag disappear nya.
"Nyahahaha! You can run but you can hide, Inday. No matter where you go, there you are!" pananakot nya.
Oh no, is this the end? This is too much, I feel degradable. My world started falling afar.
Then suddenly, Jay come from behind! Dodong was caught to the act! In the matter of minute, it's all over. I'm out of arm's way.

"Thanks Jay, my love. But how did you?" bago pa man ako matapos, sabi niya: "I was in the neighborhood. Fans din ako ni Angel eh. I heard you shout but at first I didn't give it a thought. Pero nang makita ko kayong magkahawak ng holding hands, then i give it a thought. I know something is a missed."
From then on, Dodong did not brother me again. In fact, he didn't even sister me. As in platonic at wala na talaga.
Pero kami ni Jay, heto, shoot sailing pa rin ang relationship. Lalo pa ngayon, open na kami sa isa't-isa at walang exhibitions. i feel I'm on cloud.

Find Your New Beer

Like this? Try this new brew

By: Tara Dubbs

Experts and bar snobs can tell you that you should be trying new beers and new styles, but cracking a cold one is about enjoying yourself—and the beers you already love. That doesn’t mean you’re stuck with the same old forever: “Once you figure out the styles you enjoy, dig further into that style,” says Austin Harvey, beer specialist for Chicago-based Sam’s Wine and Spirits. Here, Harvey’s recommendations in brew styles you already like.

If you like Guinness …

… you’re a stout man. (Not fat. Stout.) This dark beer is made from roasted barley or malts, giving it a rich flavor and heavier consistency. Sometimes referred to as porter, it’s flavored with coffee and chocolate and is best from England, Germany, and Scandinavia.

Try this: Samuel Smith Imperial Stout ($48 for 12-pack). Despite its pitch-black hue it’s actually milder than some of the other American and Scandinavian varieties.

If you like Yuengling Lager …

… you’re into—you guessed it—lager, the most popular beer variety in the world. The style ranges from light pilsners to dark dopplebocks. While each brew has its own unique characteristics, lagers’ taste differs from ales because of its fermentation process occurring at lower temperatures.

Try this: Ayinger Celebrator Doppelbock ($15 for 6-pack). This intense dark lager is infused with malt and caramel flavors—murky, mysterious, and delicious.

If you like New Castle …

… that’s brown ale, a beer that gets its color and name from its roasted malt. Amber varieties tend to be drier and a bit bitter whereas the deep browns are sweeter and lower in alcohol content.

Try this: Dogfish Head Indian Brown Ale ($10 for 6-pack). This American brew maintains a rich malt flavor without overpowering the more subtle hops.

If you like Fat Tire …

… you’re slugging amber ale, a beer that (like wine) gets better with age. Its complex flavors are best appreciated served cool, not cold.

Try this: Unibroue Maudite ($12 for 6-pack). The Belgian-style Canadian ale presents strong flavors rounded out by hints of sweetness.

If you like Sierra Nevada …

… that’s pale ale, a catch-all term for beers that get their flavor from pale malts and ale yeast. Most countries have their own distinctive varieties of pale ale.

Try this: Duvel ($12.49 for 4-pack), a strong Belgian Pale Ale with complex flavors—sweet, fruity, and a touch spicy.

If you like Blue Moon …

… you’re a wheat beer drinker, enjoying unique flavors because of the special yeast used in their fermentation. They also come in a less fruity American wheat ale variety, a Belgian “wit” or white variety, and the rare sour “Weiss.”

Try this: Bell’s Oberon, a hazy-gold wheat ale airs on the more citrus side with strong lemon and orange accents.

DRINK AWAY THE BLUES
Moderate drinking can help prevent depression

We now have yet another excuse...er, reason...to drink beer: It can put you in a better mood—and we're not talking about that invincible, slightly crazy, everybody's-best-friend mood.

A new study suggests that even moderate drinkers who turn abstinent may develop depression. Researchers found that mice who drank alcohol voluntarily for 28 days exhibited depression-like behavior 2 weeks after they stopped imbibing.

The negative mood was linked to a reduction in neuron production in the brain, which can also cause diminished cognitive abilities.

So as long as you drink responsibly, keep raising your glass. Wine has tons of other health benefits in addition to keeping you happy. The resveratrol in grape skins lowers your risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, Alzheimer's, and cancer.

Beer's good, too: Bioactive compounds in your brewsky battle cancer and boost metabolism. And moderate alcohol of any kind prevents clots, cleans your arteries, and reduces stress.

There's nothing wrong with always ordering your favorite. But if you're still drinking what you chugged in college, try one of these suggestions to re-enliven your taste buds.

And don't forget mixed drinks. You don't have to be a bartender; use these expert tips to create the ultimate cocktails.

Whatever your alcohol, drink it and be merry.

15 things you don't know about your penis

By: Mike Zimmerman, Illustrations by: Jason Holley

1. Smoking can shorten your penis by as much as a centimeter. Erections are all about good bloodflow, and lighting up calcifies blood vessels, stifling erectile circulation. So even if you don't care all that much about your lungs or dying young, spare the li'l guy.

2. Doctors can now grow skin for burn victims using the foreskins of circumcised infants. One foreskin can produce 23,000 square meters, which would be enough to tarp every Major League infield with human flesh.

3. An enlarged prostate gland can cause both erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation. If you have an unexplained case of either, your doctor's looking forward to checking your prostate. Even if you're not.

4. The average male orgasm lasts 6 seconds. Women get 23 seconds. Which means if women were really interested in equality, they'd make sure we have four orgasms for every one of theirs.

5. The oldest known species with a penis is a hard-shelled sea creature called Colymbosathon ecplecticos. That's Greek for "amazing swimmer with large penis." Which officially supplants Buck Naked as the best porn name, ever.

6. Circumcised foreskin can be reconstructed. Movable skin on the shaft of the penis is pulled toward the tip and set in place with tape. Later, doctors apply plastic rings, caps, and weights. Years can pass until complete coverage is attained. . . . Okay, we'll shut up now.

7. Only one man in 400 is flexible enough to give himself oral pleasure. It's estimated, however, that all 400 have given it their best shot at some point.

8. There are two types of penises. One kind expands and lengthens when becoming erect (a grower). The other appears big most of the time, but doesn't get much bigger after achieving erection (a shower).

9. An international Men's Health survey reports that 79 percent of men have growers, 21 percent have showers.

10. German researchers say the average intercourse lasts 2 minutes, 50 seconds, yet women perceive it as lasting 5 minutes, 30 seconds. Are we that good or that bad?

11. Turns out size does matter: The longer your penis, the better "semen displacement" you'll achieve when having sex with a woman flush with competing sperm. That's according to researchers at the State University of New York, who used artificial phalluses (ahem) to test the "scooping" mechanism of the penis's coronal ridge. Next up: curing cancer.

12. The penis that's been enjoyed by the most women could be that of King Fatefehi of Tonga, who supposedly deflowered 37,800 women between the years 1770 and 1784 -- that's about seven virgins a day. Go ahead, say it: It's good to be king.

13. Better-looking men may have stronger sperm. Spanish researchers showed women photos of guys who had good, average, and lousy sperm -- and told them to pick the handsomest men. The women chose the best sperm producers most often.

14. No brain is necessary for ejaculation. That order comes from the spinal cord. Finding a living vessel for said ejaculation, however, takes hours of careful thought and, often, considerable amounts of alcohol.

15. The most common cause of penile rupture: vigorous masturbation. Some risks are just worth taking.

The Hardness Factor

You have a built-in barometer of your overall health:

It's called your penis

Adapted from The Hardness Factor: How to Achieve Your Best Health and Sexual Fitness at Any Age, by Steven Lamm, M.D., with Gerald Secor Couzens, (c) 2005 HarperCollins

When the penis is hard, life is good.

When hardness diminishes, so does a man's health and his innate sense of who he is. No matter how talented a man may feel he is in bed, he defines his sex by his erection, by its strength and hardness. This is what I call the Hardness Factor.

The harder the erection, the healthier the man.

In just the past decade, researchers have made the all-important link between sexual activity and good health. When a man's blood vessels are healthy and "elastic," his heart and brain are functioning well-and his erections are rock hard. When his neural connections are firing and nitric oxide is being released in great abundance throughout his body, his cognition is high-and his erections are rock hard. When testosterone levels are normal and weight is controlled, he has the ability to train most effectively-have a healthy, trim body-and his erections are rock hard. Once a man starts to connect the dots, once he fully understands that good health and a hard erection are linked, he will begin to take better care of himself.

From my own ongoing exercise and hardness studies, I have found that much of the decline in hardness often attributed to aging is actually the result of sedentary living and poor nutrition. Once you understand its basic concepts, you realize how sexuality is a window into general health and how by staying fit you can enjoy feeling virile as long as you live.

According to a new study of 2,400 men conducted by researchers at the University of Bristol, in England, men who reported three or more orgasms per week were half as likely to have a heart attack or stroke as those who had sex less often.

On the surface, it looks as though the principal message of this study is that having sex reduces heart attack and stroke and lets you live longer. In fact, just the opposite is true: Being healthy allows you to have sex as much as you want. Having sex three times a week serves as an important marker that you are healthy and in good physical shape-you're certainly more sexually fit than a man who can't have sex three times a week. Beyond that, the strength of a man's erection-his hardness-is the true barometer of his overall health.

There is a powerful and unmistakable link between failing erections and common medical ailments, including obesity, high cholesterol levels, hypertension, depression, sleep disorders, diabetes, and heart disease. When atherosclerosis develops, it starts to clog up the tiny vessels in the penis. The impact is often seen there first, long before it ever shows up in the coronary arteries of the heart, or in any of the other 100,000 miles of blood vessels that run throughout the body.

The canary in the coal mine warned of unseen danger, and for men, the health of their penis, and more specifically the hardness of their erections, is a great early-warning indicator of underlying cardiovascular problems that may be developing.

To determine your potential heart and hardness problems, take the Hardness Factor Self-Test, on the next page.

Then get started on the Hardness Factor sexual fitness program. Below is a three-step, 4-day version of the 6-week plan in my book, The Hardness Factor: How to Achieve Your Best Health and Sexual Fitness at Any Age, that utilizes the same general principles. Follow it and you will be in the best sexual shape of your life, enjoy better sex that lasts longer, and live healthier.

Step 1: Sexual Nutrition

Your sexual performance is greatly impacted by what you consume and how much you consume. Here's what you need to do:

Cut back on portion size
Try to eat 10 percent less at each meal or about 500 calories less a day. By Day 4, you may notice a drop of 1 or 2 pounds on your scale. That is important because the amount of fat in your gut affects the amount of testosterone available to you-the more fat, the less testosterone.

Avoid fatty foods
Stop shocking your blood vessels. Fatty, high-calorie foods are not kind to erections. The fats injure your blood vessels to the point where they are stunned, preventing them from being totally responsive when sexual signals are being transmitted from brain to penis. Penile nerves lose their sensitivity when cholesterol builds up. Top saturated-fat culprits to avoid include egg yolks, butter, cream, fatty red meats, and coconut oil.

Eat nine servings of fruits and vegetables a day
They help lower your cholesterol level, an improvement that combats cardiovascular disease and increases blood flow to the penis. Leafy green vegetables are excellent sources of folic acid, calcium, magnesium, and zinc. Citrus fruits offer plenty of vitamin C. Go heavy on the blueberries. They're the fruit with the highest amounts of free-radical-crushing antioxidants.

Drink black or green tea
Both are high in antioxidants. As a morning beverage or with a meal, a cup of tea has too many disease-fighting benefits to be ignored, among them protecting against cancer and maintaining heart function and strong bones.

Spice up your foods
Chile peppers, ginger, and other spicy foods can enhance sexual performance by increasing circulation.

Eat a hardness-friendly dinner
Look at dinner as a training meal-you are getting ready to perform later. The right choices will help to set the mood and give you enough calories without overloading your gut, so more blood flows to where you really need it. Some important guidelines:
• Avoid before-dinner cocktails.
• Don't order anything braised, scalloped, sauteed, creamy, or fried.
• Choose entrees that are steamed, boiled, baked, poached, grilled, or roasted.
• Pass on all foods high in MSG or salt.
• Split your entree with your partner.
• Have salad dressing served on the side. Better yet, opt for oil and vinegar.
• Trim the fat from red meat, and have any poultry dish served without skin.
• Choose fruit or sherbet for dessert.

Step 2: Sexual Supplements

Which of nature's legendary hardness enhancers really work? My study results, and those of others, have proven that there are several interesting supplements that significantly enhance hardness and increase sexual interest. Start taking the following supplements over the next 4 days.

Pycnogenol/L-arginine mixture
Pycnogenol, extracted from the bark of a French pine tree, is a precursor to aspirin. It enhances blood flow to the heart and to the penis. It also helps restore elasticity and smoothness to the skin by reinforcing collagen fibers and strengthening the tiny capillaries, which help nourish the cells. L-arginine is an amino acid that is used by the body to build protein. When L-arginine supplements are taken in tandem with a daily routine of physical activity, a synergistic effect is produced that markedly increases your production of nitric oxide. This means greater blood flow to all areas of the body, and specifically to your penis. Take 80 milligrams of Pycnogenol and 3 grams of L-arginine daily (take them on an empty stomach, since protein will inhibit absorption into the bloodstream).

Omega-3s
Take 3 grams of fish-oil tablets daily for vascular support and protection. Research has shown that the marine oil reduces sudden death from heart attack, probably by preventing fatal rhythm disturbances. I like the fact that omega-3s, available in capsule form, are excellent for reducing triglycerides-another form of fat circulating in your blood-and help protect the tiny blood vessels of the penis.

OPCs
Oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPCs) enhance the activity of vitamins C and E. For improved blood flow and extra protection against insults to blood vessels, add 25 milligrams of red-wine extract and 100 milligrams of grape-seed extract daily to your 4-day regimen. Both contain OPCs.

Vitamin C
This potent antioxidant seems to protect against heart disease. I believe this will translate into protection for the endothelium (lining of the veins), as well. I suggest 500 milligrams of vitamin C daily.

Horny goat weed
Yes, that's really its name. I call it the great libido-booster. I recently completed a 45-day double-blind placebo-controlled study of a Chinese herbal mixture comprised primarily of horny goat weed (Epimedium grandiflorum), along with three other well-known herbal sex boosters (Lepidium meyenii, Mucuna pruriens, and Polypodium vulgare). How horny goat weed creates sexual fire is unclear, but researchers think the boost may be related to its stimulating properties, which may work on the hypothalamus or pituitary gland. Take two capsules twice daily and an additional four capsules 2 hours before a sexual encounter.

Step 3: Sexual Fitness

The surest way to enhance hardness, whet sexual appetite, boost self-esteem, and increase sexual activity is through regular physical activity. Exercise improves fitness, and sexual functioning is an important part of that condition. It also positively affects brain-wave activity, which makes you feel energized. Working out regularly builds stamina, preventing or delaying fatigue during sex. And finally, exercise boosts levels of the male hormone testosterone, leading to heightened libido.

Raise your heart rate To get your heart pumping, make a conscious effort to add 5,000 steps to your daily hoofing, roughly 2 miles. Get a step counter if it helps. (If you already run or bike, these extra steps will supplement that exercise.) A walking program can rev up hormones, flush stress, whittle away fat, and rejuvenate the body, filling you with renewed vigor, confidence, and the glow of good health. I want you to work up to 10,000 steps daily. Why 10,000? Research has determined this is the number of steps that will bolster overall fitness and health and knock off weight. And when the weight goes down, erections go up and stay up.

Build strength Muscle fatigue during sex is a bummer, so add pushups, ab curls, and squats to the 4-day routine. These exercises strengthen the shoulders, chest, abdominals, buttocks, and legs, all of which are called upon during sexual activity. You already know how to do them, but you might not be familiar with the Cobra. This yoga move is one of the best stretching-strengthening combination exercises around, because it relaxes the muscles of the lower back as it gently stretches the muscles of the abdomen, hips, and neck. Lie facedown on a mat with your face almost touching the mat. Bend your arms and place your palms on the mat beside your shoulders. Keep your legs together and the tops of your feet resting on the mat. Push up, straightening your elbows as you lift your head off the mat, but keep your pelvis pushed into the mat so your spine arches backward. Look at the ceiling. Hold for 1 second; then descend to the mat. Repeat nine times.

Stretch every day
To promote optimal flexibility-the ability to use muscles and joints through their full range of motion-I want you to perform the following stretches every day. Regular stretching will help relieve stress, a major contributing factor to hardness problems. When performed in a slow and focused way, stretching can be an excellent relaxation therapy as well as a tension easer.

The side lunge keeps the muscles used during sex-the adductor, core, and lower-back muscles and the quadriceps, buttocks, and hamstrings-limber and flexible. Stand with your feet slightly apart. Contract your abdominal muscles. Keeping your right leg straight, take a large step sideways with your left foot, toes pointing forward. Bend your left knee. As you lunge, bend your torso toward your left thigh. Reach down and touch your left foot with both hands. Return to the starting position by pushing off your left foot to straighten your leg. Repeat the exercise with your opposite leg. Do 10 with each leg.

The crossover stretch loosens the muscles of the lower back. Lie on your back. Bend your left knee at 90 degrees and extend your arms out to the sides. Keeping your head and shoulders flat on the floor, pull your bent left knee toward the floor and twist your lower body toward your outstretched left arm. Hold for 45 seconds. Switch sides. Repeat.

When you complete this 4-day program, you will certainly feel different. You will achieve measurable changes in flexibility, strength, and hardness. But this is just a glimpse of what the complete 6-week program offers. Hardness is a lifestyle, not 96 hours' worth of quick changes. The idea is to feel good about yourself emotionally and physically always. It's a lifestyle decision.
